"ONE TOOT—AN YE'RE 'OOT"

(To The Editor.) ~:- . Sir, —The attitude of the chairman of the Nelson Hospital Board reminds . one of a painful experience that befel two very old friends of mine, his Excellency Sir Rupert Porter and his good lady; who re-visited Scotland a few years sin sine. Lady Porter, as many know, is very deaf —she carries an ear-trum-pet. Together on the Sabbath morning they went to the Established Chur,ch — .at a time mind you, when the lady suffragettes were painfully poignant, smashing shop windows and disturbing church services, etc., etc. The old Scotch verger observed that trumpet with obvious and grave suspicion—and on showing them into their seats, leanth over and audibly whispered into her ladyship's ear, "Now mistress, remember ye're in the hoose of God—and one toot—and, ye're 'oat." The chairman evidently considers that he is on so lofty a pedestal that, he i« above all criticism—and all who dare so to do will be ignominiously "outed"—including The Mail. "One toot and ye're l oot -"„ Well, wejll wait and 'see. "R.S." is not' a ratepayer. Quite true, and thank goodness he* is not—just now anyhow. I count that a signal blessing the way things are going. And I never advocated a poultry farm in front of the new hospital. All the same it is a very sensible suggestion—and there are ample groj|»ls in the rear for this purpose—and eggs are nourishing. Your leader to-night, whilst . moderate in tone was by no means lacking in power, and I feel pretty sure that it will be endorsed by ninetenths of your readers. The "one toot and ye're oot" policy will not. go down with the ratepayers—not in their present humour—atid they pay the rates. 1 am, etc., R.S.
