PAINTERS’ DISPUTE
(United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day, At the painters’ dispute conference Mr Cornwell, for the employees, said they were asking 2/9 an hour, men giving instruction to be paid 1/6 a day extra. -'/ Replying to a suggestion that if the demands were too highi there might be a danger of people painting their own houses, Mr Cornwell said a man would only paint his own house once. A sub-clause was agreed to that no worker be compelled to work longer than five hours without a meal. The employees asked double time for work on Sundays and statutory holidays; also that a meal allowance of 1/6 be paid where necessary. There yas division of opinion on the definition of suburban work, the men demanding that anything over one mile from the general post office be classed as suburban; also that travelling expenses be paid beyond that distance or else that they be conveyed to work free, the time spent in travelling to and from work to be paid for at the ordinary rates. The conference resinned to-day.
