PRIVATE ROOMS

AT NELSON HOSPITAL The following recommendation concerning private rooms at the Nelson Public Hospital was before the 'Board yesterday afternoon : .“That the special rooms at the hospital be use dprimarily for the accommodation of patients whose condition requires isolation, and any other person desiring special accommodation be allowed it, providing it is available, on the understanding that they must be prepared to vacate same if such are required by the resident surgeon for immediate use.” Mr Berryman objected to the reten lion of the words after “available.” If a patient was willing to pay £2 a week move for a room he should not be liable to be turned out. He moved that- the last part of the clause be deleted. Mr Spiers, in seconding, said lie thought a certain number of private rooms should be reserved for the publie. If patients thought, they would be liable, (o be shifted it. might prevent, them for engaging private rooms. The resident surgeon said there were only eight side rooms. Mr Tunnicliff thought, that the clause was a perfectly safe one. Air Spiers said that when the hospital was erected he had expressed the hope that it would do away with private hospitals; but if the clause was adopted lie did not think it would have this effect.

On the motion being put,, it was car ried.
