CITY COUNCIL AND ITS BUSINESS
I (To the Editor.) Sir, —Your leading article of Thursday las to the Nelson City Council is long ['overdue and could well have been writj ten in very much stronger terms. The present mode, of carrying on the City I Council's duties is only equal to the j needs of a Pariah Council or of a small Road Board. To attempt to carry on ihe work of the City without dividing ! the same up to the oversight of (at, J least) finance, roads, building, and san.i- ---; ta-ry, lighting and wafer committees, is | doomed to failure. Each committee. ! should have its own chairman (the [Mayor being ex officio a member) who Would be responsible for its duties audi I ttie officers would report to him in re- • tpect of !u"s committee's affairs. Then. hi each Council meeiTng the committee's report would come up for discussion and confirmation or dissent, the whole Council having previously received the) agenda showing the business brought; forward by each committee. Instead therefore of only having the Mayor cognisant of what works are being done there will be the chairman of "each committee in addition and this of itself must prevent work being left pigeonholed in any department. In addition to this a j committee might be empowered to deal with urgent matters. lam pte..| RATEPAYER, j
