Alexis, Walter and Henry Manderville. were each sentenced to six years' penal servitude on ."il charges of conspiracy to obtain large sums of money by false pretence?. They pleaded guilty to twelve charges. The prosecution said the brothers, through advert isemenls. circulars and the new speper Financial Mail. which Alexis edited, and in connection with which he formed a company, induced the public to Imv slocks and shares. The company in ]<H<) showed a loss of Cf,0,()()0. Nevertheless, he declared a dividened of :!il per cenl from i. lie money paid by subsequent subscribers. During the years IDLS-21 the Maildei". ille's received fnun the public toII.SOO of which t'.'tl.'iOU was paid to the Mail Company and the balance misappropriated for iheir own use. All the brothers maintained expensive establishments. Il was also recalled that the Mandelvilles' bucket shop's failed in 190!) with liabilities totalling £4:24.00(1 and assets amounting to £OO. It is impossible to say the extent to which the public were defrauded in the present ease but half a million would be a modest estimate.
