A publication entitled Empire Rebel was mentinned at the resumed proceedings .against twelve Communists at Mow Street. The police gave evidence concerning the finding of literature at the Communist, headquarters. :ineluding a circular to which tin* Empire Rebel was attached. They declared that it. apparently circulated among factory workers. They produced another circular addressed to Losovsky, Moscow, also one to the secretary of the Merlin branch of the .Moscow Internationale complaining of non reicipt of promised funds. Among letters rend 'at the trial of Communists, one said: "Half a dozen good parly members in the police forces of the bigger towns, such as (ilasgow. would he cei-tain to he very useful." Detective Sergeant lienshnw gave evidence that "a quarter of a million documents were confiscated at headquarters, including a letter from E. \Y. -Middleton, asking the party's official attitude towards Communists wishing to join the police force, which read : "Dear Comrade.—There is no objection to members of the party joining the police, provided they are thoroughly reliable Communists, but before permission is given members' X’cords should be care-, fully considered and complete truslworthyncss established.” Another letter to the secretary of the Third International at -Moscow referred to arrangements for assisting Mulgarian comrades in the Mulgarian campaign, and concluded by urging more discretion in handling communications from -Moscow, adding: "Your letters make somewhat unnecessary references to the transmission of money by secret channels."’ The letter is dated January, 192-1. and addressed to Comrade Losovsky, .Moscow, and complained . "W,. na'-e not. received the promised money Vi e rei ember, v.e were promised £l5O monthly for si', months, totalling £9OO, and also additional sums for the president’s and secretary's wiges.’’
