THE HURUNUI SEAT

TWO REFORM CANDIDATES

By Telegraph.—Special to The Mail.)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A few weeks ago it was announced that Mr Norman Campbell had been asked and bad consented to contest the Hurunui seat in the interest of the Reform Party. It is now stated that Mr J. G. Armstrong will be a candidate in the same interests at the approaching general election.

In a statement made to a reporter, Mr Armstrong said there is apparently some misapprehension as to what is the position with regard to the Reform candidate for Hurunui. At a representative meeting attended by delegates from different centres in the electorate held at Amberley on May 28th, the names of Messrs Norman Campbell and J. G. Armstrong were submitted, and Mr Armstrong was selected by a very large majority as the Reform candidate for the Hurunui seat. Since then, a report lias appeared in the newspapers of a deputation which asked Mr Campbell to stand. This has been assumed, in some quarters, to indicate that Mr Armsh’ong has withdrawn. That is not the case, and as far as the election is concerned. Mr Armstrong will be a candidate in the Reform interest against all comers. If there is "any doubt yet, as to the selection of the Reform candidate, Mr Armstrong is quite prepared to submit to the party to make its selection on the same lines as followed in respect of the selection of the Reform candidate for Ellesmere.

Mr H. G. Livingstone, secretary of the North Canterbury branch of the Reform Party, told a reporter that during fusion negotiations, the Reform organisations had been lying dormant, hut. now. that these negotiations had been definitely settled, conferences similar to the one held in connection with the Ellesmere seat would be held to decide upon the official Reform candidate for Hurunui and other seats.
