MORE SERIOUS BUSINESS

HOUSE NOW SETTLING DOWN AFTER A LONG DEBATE MANY BILLS INTRODUCED (From ‘Tut Parliamentary Correspondent) WELLINGTON,. This Day After having talked itself almost to exhaustion over the Address-in-Reply debate, the House of Representatives has now settled down to the serious business of the Session, although that- is not to say that- the Government’s legislative measures will all be treated with that amount of seriousness and despatch which the Government probably considers they should receive. Y r esterday afternoon, the first batch of nine Bills came down by Governor-General’s message, the list comprising the Kauri Gum Export Control, Repayment of Public Debt, Registration of Nurses and Midwives, Stone Quarries Amendment, Iron and Steel Industries Amendment, Weights and Measures, Coal Mines Amendment, Fire Boards Amendment arid Child Welfare Bills, and each of them was read a first time.

In the evening Mr Monteith moved the second reading of the Labour Party Bill having for its object the protection of the majoriy of the mernbem of a union against the minority in the matter of industrial awards and agreements. The second reading was agreed toi and the Bill was referred to the Labour Bills Committee.

After this. Mr Sidey, with his customary heroic fortitude, invited the House, to coincide with his views on. the ancient topic of daylight saving. All the old time arguments for and against Mr Sidey’s pet lamb were again brought forth ad lib., but its anticipated slaughter was deferred ,the second reading being agreed to on the voices.

the House then agreed to practice electric light saving and adjourned at 9.40 p.m.
