TRAINING APPRENTICES
A very hopeful as well as interesting ; application under the Apprentices Act, 1023. was heard by the Arbitration j Court this week. By order of the j Court all firms employing apprentice , molirr mechanics arc. to pay a levy for: each apprentice attending the Technical College. The Act gives the Court ; power to strike the levy if a majority \ of the employers in any industry cm- , ploying a majority of the workers on ; gaged in it express a desire to estab- t lisii an institution for the training of j their apprentices or to assist an institu- j tion already in existence. Individual em- ; plovers may apply for exemption from j payment. It is evident that in the event j of any difference of opinion it might be difficult to carry out the excellent mi- j tention of the law. It may be noted • also that, as the clause stands, if one firm employed the majority of workers ■ in a- given district—a situation bv.no means impossibV— and opposed the idea 1 o fa levy, the Court could, not. sin to one. None of these difficulties was en- ; 1 countered yesterday. Unanimity among , the .employers was claimed, and was evidenced by the absence of any objee- j tion.—Herald," Auckland.
