SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING

•. The monthly meeting of The Motueka District High' School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, there being present Messrs G. VV. Ro-ar.iiy (chayman.), C. B. Morris (secrotary), T. Brough, P. V. Kztapo, L-. Good d.v S. P. Ctav and J. N. Bateman. An apyltfgv for absence was tendered on behalf id Air R. \Y. Stevens. •Accounts amounting to £15,15.T0 were passed for payment. The chairman of the works committee (Mr J. T. Brough) intimated that lie had nothing to "re port in the meantime in connection with the proposed school swimming baths. Regarding the opening of the science laboratory, it. was decided to consider this matter at a later date. On the motion of Messrs Knapp and Bateman a special committee, consisting of Messrs Clay, Bateman, the. Chairman and the Secretary, was set up to consider The question ol erecting a dental clinic on the school property, the interest on the cost of construction to be guaranteed by the school committee. It was reported that the gross proceeds from the recent school concert reached the satisfactory sum of £36/8/4.

Correspondence was received from Yva ter wort Its Ltd., stating that the C.R.M. balopticon. ordered by the committee last March was arriving by the Papaitui and would be forwarded as soon as Customs clearance was effected ; also re colour screen for lantern.—Resolved (Messrs Knapp and Goodall) that the colour screen be purchased. An offer was then made by the Caledonian Society to purchase the screen and loan same to the school when required.—Accepted. Motueka Rugby Union. forwarding Cheque for £5 as a donation to* the School ground improvement- fund.—Resolved (the Chairman and Mr Knapp) that the Union be thanked for .game. Education Board, re subsidies on voluntary contributions, etc. —Letter received. Education Board, advising that. Miss M. E. Harford has been transferred to the staff of Richmond school. —Received. Mrs Massey and family, thanking the committee for its message of sympathy in their recent bereavement.—Received.

R. R. McGregor (.Motueka Cash Service Store), re advertising space in connection with school concert programme. —After considerable, discussion in committee, it was resolved, on resuming, that the letter be received. Bible in Schools League (Wellington), asking the committee 1o approach the local M.P. with reference to supporting Mr Isitt’s Bill with a “referendum of parents’ ” clause.—Resolved on the motion of Messrs Clay and Brough that the letter be received and no action taken i E. Brittain, forwarding catalogue of unbreakable apparatus for the children’s playground, also offering to supply am] erect same.—Resolved (Messrs Brough and Goodall) that the catalogue be filed for reference. 5 The headmaster (.Mr O. The school was closed on the 11th and 14th May on account of the death of the Prime -Minister. , Miss Harford was transferred to Richmond school on Ist inst. The compulsory attendance clause, was again put into operation on the Ist June. The school concert was repeated on Friday, 22nd ult., and our thanks are due to our many helpers. Assistance was given to the JRiwaka branch of the PJunket- Society to raise funds, and we were enthusiastically received. 1 would recommend that the. committee should take out an insurance cover on the piano, libraries, etc., in case of destruction bv fire. The. dental clinic is now in full swing. Resolved (Messrs Goodall and Knapp) that Mr Lane be thanked for gift of large waste paper tin. On the recommendation of the headmaster it was resolved (Messrs Brough and Goodall) that a covering of £250 he taken out on the piano, library balopticon and other senool property purchased by the committee. Resolved (the Chairman and Mr Brough) that Mr Douglas be given permission to run a series of dances at the liau school, on condition that certain stipulations re use of school arc carried cut, it being suggested that the proceeds from the dances be utilised to purchase a piano for liau school. A matter in collection with the conveyance of children to school was left to the works committee. A vote of thanks was accorded the I3ev. Scott for the use and manipulation of lantern in connection with Lieut.-Col. Thoms’ lecture on the previous evening, and to Mr Heath, Borough Electrical Engineer, for lighting arrangements. At the close of the meeting, the bal-' opticon, which had arrived that day, was put together in readiness far n test. The lantern, besides displaying remarkably fine workmanship, is complete with attachments for screening postcards, photographs, pages of books magazines, slides, or in fact any object that can be placed within it.
