MONTHLY MEETING I —•*, The following business was transacted at Hit! monthly meeting of tin; Waiiiß'it County Council after we went, to press yesterday afternoon : The'matter of the Council's new offices was discussed, and the chairman was empowered to gel plans prepared bv Mr Griffin. "The Council (silticg as the Appleby Domain Board) instructed the Engineer to submit, a report on the erosion of Hie river bank to the next meeting of the Council. CORRESPONDENCE Correspondence was dealt with from the following : District Highways Council No. 11', re grant for Neisoii-iikmhcim road (Lud river to'Rai Saddle).—Received. District Highways Council No. 11. re heavy traffic by-laws.--Clerk to represent Council.

Public Works Department, Wellington. re motor lorry regulations. After a discussion the following amendments were recommended: That maximum width be not more that lOit: that periscopes be allowed to extend sft from centre of lorries. Or. Wilkinson maintained that Die service cars were doing far more damage to the roads than the motor lorries, and the Minister appeared to have singled out the motor lorries. t Cv. Berryman, raised a point of order. All classes of motors were mentioned in the proposed regulations. Cr. Hewetson said the Council's solicitors would look after the matter. Cr. Wilkinson, continuing, said his district had no railway and they had to depend on the motor, lorries. He would move: “That this Council is of the opinion that the tax on serivee cars be double that on motor lorries. There was am seconder. Cr. Berryman moved that the proposals he agreed to with the addition of the Council’s amendments. —Seconded by Cr. Drummond and carried. Crs. Martin, solicitor, Wellington, forwarding opinin re Council’s power to reduce or non-collect rates, and that Council had no power to reduce a rate lifter it was levied.—Clerk to reply to deputation concerned and also send a copy of Mr Martin’s letter. Cr Berryman said he had written t-o't-hie Audit -Department, on the matter, i and tlm reply was that it- liad no power to object to, or to authorise, such rebate. Tile Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, forwarded an extract, from New Zealand Gazette, of 18th inst., re proposed new county. Cr. Drummond moved that the Waimea County send in an objection. Cr. Macmahon seconded. As a ratepayer in me county lie did not think it would be in the interest of the county for another one to be formed. Cr. Wilkinson thought Die County should be represented on. the Commission. It might be well to find out if they would be represented. Personally he thought the Council would be better off if the proposed new ouo .was formed. Cr. Confer said it was not necessary for Waimea County to show its hand, the new (proposed) county had not shown its hand. Cr. Berryman emphatically asscijfcd. that everything had been fair and above board. They had had open meeting. There was over 90 per cent of the ratepayers in the two ridings had signed the petition for the new county—and more were to come. Cr. .Macmahon thought that many had signed through misstatements. Cr. Berryman resented the remark. Cr. Corder said lie had heard that one had signed under the influence of four beers. (Laughter). Cr. r J unmcliffe: Perhaps he was not the only one. Cr. Kenyon thought the present Council might- be able to learn something from the proposed new Council.

Several members thought the Waimea County might be better off if the new county was formed. Cr. Drummond, as an olj resident of the district, was utterly opposed to the formation of a new county. . Ihe motion was lost by five to four. Ayes: Crs. Drummond, Ilewetsou, Macmahon, and Tunnicliffe. Noes : Crs. Berryman, Wilkinson, Corder, Kenyon, and the chairman. Cr. Macmahon moved that when the Commission visited Nelson 'the Chairman and Cleric represent the Council.—Carried. Crs. Drummond and Macmahon were

Berryman moved ttlat the Engineer look into the matter and supply necessary data for obtaining the necessary rough timber for bridge at Upper atanlcy Brook.—Carried. Lr.
