PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES
There was a large gathering of footballers and supporters of the Rugby game at the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening, when the presentation was made of the trophies won during the season. -Mr K. Boon (President of the Rugb Union) was in the chair and the Mayor of Nelson, was also present. After the toast of “The King” had been honoured the. captains of the winning teams were called upon in turn to step forward and accept the various trophies, which were won as follow’s:—
President’s Cup, Third Class Competition : College A. Senior Cup: Nelson Club. ..Junior Cup: AVakatu.
Seven-a-side (Ist Monday in August) Moves Clip and Rugby Union gold medals, Nelson Club (W. Reed,, J\ White, H. Vouug, R. Garvin, V. Dvce, T. Mahoney, C. Kinzett). Charity Shield: Rival seniors. Fourth Class Cup: College. Junior Soven-a-side, Staliard Shield. College A. Noad Cup, for. most points in all grades: Rival Club. Third Class Seven-a-side: Wakatu. Air Moon then said that Air Sherlock had dpnated miniature golden footballs for the individual members of the Seddon Shield Team. There was hearty applause as the prosehtat iotas were made, and Air Sherlock was loudly cheered for his medals, which came as a. complete surprise to the recipients. . The President mentioned that the Haig Cup, won by the Nelson team at the June seven-a-side tournament, under the rules governing it, had to bh presented at a special meeting The Boon place-kicking competition and the schools championship would be dodecided on Saturday- next. ■ Alessrs B. Gallagher and O. Shain were then asked by the President to accept presentations for their assistance in coaching and training the Nelson Shield'team while in c-aihp. The following toast list, was proposed and responded to as follows: “N.Z.R.U.” and “All Blacks” (Air G. Logan and Mr B. Galagher'' “Sister Unions” (Air E. J. Kemnitz ana Mr C. Leaper) • “Our Shield Team” (Air G. Batchelor and Mr W. Reed); “Nelsoii Rugby Union” (Air B. Edwards and Air K. Boon) ; “Competition Winners” (Mr G. Johnson and captains of teams) ; “Referees’ Association) Air Blincoe and Mr B. Edwards) ; “Kindred Sports” (Air J. T. Piki and Air F. Huggins) ; “The Selectors” (Mr AV. Shain and Air K. Boon): “Mr AV., Reed senior” (Air B. Edwards and Mr W. Reed junior): “The Press” (Mr F. Huggins and Air F. Hare);
In a short speech the Alayor (Air W. Lock) congratulated the Union in the way it had managed its affairs. He said that football had made great strides in Nelson since the war and since the Seddon Shield had been won by Nelson. There was just as good material in Nelson as anywhere else in New Zealand. He hoped to see the Shield again in Nelson. A capital musical programme was contributed to bv the following: Air Toone, songs; Alessrs B. Edwards and Gascoigne, duet; Mr Kingston!, humorous songs ; Mr F. Mason, songs ; Air F. Huggins, songs; Air G. Toilerton .songs and monologues. In addi-tion"-to these, which ‘brought down the /louse,” Air Tollerton. gave a clever exhibition of sfeight of hand and wa s repc todly recalled. Air A. Gascoigne played the accompaniments. The National Anthem concluded a most enjoyable function.
