In the doubles Brookes and Schlesingor defeated Cuslinan and Ridwav by default. In tlie first round of the doubles Kahns and Weinstein defeated Semple and Rowland 6—3, 6—l; in the second round Kalms and Weinstein defeated Norton and Brown 4—6, 6—l, 6—4, Brooks and Sehlcsinger defeated Guild and Gardner 6-4. B—lo, 6—2. A Providence (Rhode Island) message gives the draw in the American zone for the finals in the Davis Cun series between Australia and Japan "’starting tomorrow as follows: —Thursday, ratterson v. Shimizu, Wood v. Okamoto ; Friday, doubles, Patterson and Wood v. Hantza and Okamoto; Saturday, Wood v. Shimizu and Okamoto v. Patterson. NEW YORK, August 11.
The Australians began the Davis Cup preliminary with Japan at*Providence to-day. I'n the first match Patterson defeated Shimidzu, 7—-5, 11—0, 6—4.
