MONEY IN HER STOCKING
WOMAN CHARGED WITH THEFT SIN -MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT A prompt- arrest by the police resulted in ' the appearance *at the Auckland ■Police Court of Annie Hartley, aged 48, charged with the theft of £2O. the property of Thomas Brickt. Says the Herald. Air J. W. Poynton, S.M., and Air J. H. Fray, ,T. P., occupied the Bench. On hearing the charge accused smilingly pleaded not guilty. IS he added ■that she hoped- complainant- was present because he put the £2O in her stocking. There was much suppressed amusement throughout the case. Thomas Bridd, a labourer, gave, evidence that- he arrived from the country •on Wednesday, and, meeting the accused in Hobson Street about' 5.50 pirn., went with her to her boarding house. On retiring witness had a £2O note and some silver, but in the morning the note had disappeared.' Air Poynton; Did you hear her say -you put the note into her stocking—is that so': ” Witness: “That, would be a funny place to put it. -All 1 gave her was a £1 note. ’ , Evidence was given as to the finding of the note in accused's stocking.
Accused admitted the money was in her stocking, but said Bridd had put- it. there. “I promised him 1 would meethim at >St. Matthew's Church at eleven o'clock and give, ib to him,’’ added accused. Mr Poyntonr “What, is t.luit?'’ When the remark was repeated Mr Poynfcon said: “Oh, I thought you said yoit'would'give it to St. Matthew’s.” Accused: “Oh, no.” ■Mr Poynton: “Didn't you feel the note in your stocking when you put it on this nmvnincr?*’ A long list of . previous! convictions against Hartley was Lauded up by fier- . geant. Howell. “Oh. yes, wo know her; she has been here before,” remarked the magistrate, who imposed a sentence of six months' imprisonment.
