TRADE MATTERS

(United Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 13. At to night's meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Industrial Association, the chairman said lie had heard that I lie metal window frames for Queen Marv Hospital at Hanmer were being ordered from Britain. These frames, lie added, were made in New Zealand, and should* have been obtained from a New Zealand maker. A member said 'that a Christchurch firm was the successful tenderer for the supply of metal frames, and had placed the order in Britain without giving loc.il manufacturers an opportunity to supply. The chairman said that representations should be sent to the Government asking that in all Government contracts or sub contracts provision should be made whereby New Zealand manufacturers should have an opportunity of tendering for the supply of material or equipment that could be made in' the Dominion. This suggestion was agreed to.

TRADE WITH JAVA A letter was received from Auckland regarding a proposal to send a trade mission to Java. Air Jenkins suggested that a conference should be held between representatives of the Auckland, Wellington, and Canterbury Associations. The Dunedin Association, be said, did not favour the proposal, but the other three should make an effort to carry it into effect. lie felt confident that some, help would be provided by tiie Government. In reply to a question, lie said

the Canterbiuy Association’s quota should be raised by a special appeal to manufacturers. Canterbury and Auckland were willing to contribute to the cost of the mission, and he hoped Wellington would come in also as the out-

come of the proposed conbieuce. The chairman said it would not he fair for two associations to hear the cost of a missiotier for too benefit of manufacturers all over New Zealand. Mr 11. Holland said Canterbury and Auckland should go ahead with the mission if other centres would not join it. Mr Jenkins's, suggest ion regarding (lie conference was adopted.
