Devastating floods, involving appalling loss of life and dnmgae, are widespread, over areas in China.
Many towns and villages and enormous tracts of country are submerged. Tientsin was in imminent danger of inundation owing to the volume of watei passing seaw -.rd. Chinese soldiers are working iay and night on dykes holding back the flood, thus largely contributing to the saving of the city. Westward and northward of Tientsin 2000 villages are submerged, and flood victims are pouring into Pekin. At Kalgan 4000 were drowned as the result of dykes bursting. Belated reports from the provinces of Chiliii, Honan, Hunan and Kwangt.ung confirm the widespread devastation and the imminence of famine.
An approximate estimate of the total drowned is in the vicinity of 50,000; while the homeless must number several million.
