WANGAPEKA TRACK
EXTENSION TO KARAMEA URGED
The matter of extending the Wangapeka track to Karamea has been dismissed from time to time by various local bodies, and the Government urged to make a grant for the purpose, bo fur, however, nothing has beeii done. The subject cropped up at the Waimea City Council meeting to-day, when a paragraph in the engineer a .report concerning a bridge over the Halt nvei was under discussion. , Cr. .Drummond hoped that a the bridge was built it would be put in the most convenient locality, as some day it would bo the main highway to Karamea. Cr. Wilkinson said he had been all over the country as far as Karamea, and i here were no engineering difficulties m extending the track, and lie was pcifectly satisfied it could be extended at a, reasonable cost. He moved that the Government be urged to place a sum on the estimates for the work. Cr Drummond said it. would be a continuation of the Wangapeka track. He agreed with Cr. Wilkinson that there were no engineering difficulties. It was a great mineral country but had never been developed. . Cr. Berryman was in favour ot t.iio Government being urged to do something where there was a prospect o opening up the country The acting chairman (Cr. Macmahon) said the Chamber of Commerce had constantly urged that the track should be completed to Karamea. The Government, 'had shelved the matter, but it should bo pushed forward cn every occasion. One great advantage that would accrue by opening up the track vouH be that advantage could be .taken If He Urge quantity cf feed in Karamea in the cummer, whereby stock- at this raid* w hep feed war, scarce, could be taken Vo Karamea within -adev/' days instead of weeks as at present. Cr. Hewetson supported and suggested that the co-operation of the Bullet” County : Council should ho enlisted. In Karamea there was some of the richest daiiying land in the Dominion. The. motion rvas carried, it being a,so resolved that copies of the resolution bo forwarded to the members for Buller, Motueka and Nelson and the Buller County Council.
