BRITISH HOUSING BILL

THE third read ing of the Housing Bill passed the House of Commons by 226 votes to 13.1. The Minister in charge of the Bill, the Rt. Hon. J. Wheal ley (Minister of Health) said that he regretted he. was not. able to introduce a Socialistic measure, but the country was not ready for Socialism. It would therefore seem that the Bill referred to' hv the British Attorney-General (Mr i’. Hastings, K.C.) was shorn of its Socialistic elements, in deference to members of the Liberal Party, before it was submitted to the Commons. The Bill as passed by (lie Commons has been rend a first time in the House of Lords. This incident evidently means tluiL the British Premier has taken to heart the protest, of Mr Lloyd George, and has placated Liberal opinion rather than try to force a Socialistic measure through the House, a proceeding which would have led to disaster. Thus what promised to he a crisis in home politics was averted.
