NELSON EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held to-day. There were present: .Messrs F. Y\ . O. Smith (chairman).Hon. \Y. il. Mclntyre, H. d. Hill, E. d. Scantlebury, \\'. C. Baigent. .grave of absence was gianted .Messrs Canavan and Boves. The .Murchison School Committee renewed the application for a new school site. ihe chairman said he would be pleased to assist the application in ail'- way possible. A general discussion ensued on the application of the Hope School Committee renewing its application fupermission to remove gum trims from school grounds. As the Board had previously- refused permission, nothing could be done at Ihe meeting and Mr Dill gave notice of motion that permission lie granted. Matter to stand over. It- was resolved that the Department, bo informed that the Wai-ula i< sklents were not in a position to contribute . financial assistance, but v-ore prepared to dear ground and make ready for occupation free of cost.

The I’card decided to make the Department an offer to contribute .Clod towards the cost of acquiring additional site, Brooklyn. Little Grey Comm il tee asked that additional land be- acquired for lior.se paddock. It. was resolved that if the. Committee contributes Co, this would carry subsidy of .Co, and the Board would then favourably consider purchase of two acres. The Motupipi Committee asked that an additional area be purchased (estimated cost £110). —Held over. It was resolved that tenders be ci lied lor removal of buildings on. recently acquired addition to site of Keel ton School, the, tenders to be submitted to Committee before acceptance. 3he Committee forwarded a contribution of £3O towards purchase el Airs Tepffer’s section. Eaiuham Committee was offered £25 towards erection of shelter sited. Ihe Brooklyn Committee was granted i l 10s for cupboard for school library. Churchill Committee’s application >or erection of lean-to was referred to architect, as was also matter of shelter shed, Cronadun, and extension school porch at Glenhope. Hillside Committee applied for, 200 macracarpa trees for* planting on school reserve. Chairman and architect to visit ,with power to act. The Inangahua Junction Committee’s application for additions, to school was deferred to end of June, when the average attendance will be ascertained.

The Kaitanga Committee was granted £5 for clearing school grounds. Kongahu Committee’s application for grant of £8 to fence plot- for agricultural classes was hold over.

Little Grey Committee’s application for installation of up-to-date sanitary system was referred to architect.

The Department wrote approving of grant of £4B 16s towards the cost of improvements to teacher’s residence, ilio repairs are to be carried out. The tender of G. Ilarburgh (£6B 14s 8(1) for repairing and repainting Little Wanganui School was accepted. Lower Takaka School was granted -e stools for science room. The Committee was also granted 200 feet of d’essetl timber for forms. Mawherniti Committee applied for a look ease for school library and lor a wheelbarrow.—-Resolved that the cupboard be supplied and the wheel-, 1 arrow granted provided it was sc-! cured locally. Anderson permanently to the Stockton School. It was resolved to inform a teacher that, leave of absence must be. obtained in all eases where leave is wanted. An application from Millcrton to substitute woodwork for metal-work classes was granted. I)r. Keith reported l lint lie bad visited Murchison regarding an outbreak ot diphtheria. Out of oil swabs; taken from school children two were found to be positive carriers.
