BABY BONUS
ACT STRONGLY CONDEMNED

Giving evidence before, the Commission on National Insurance Sir James Barrett condemned the baby bonus as one of the worst Acts over "introduced. It had not increased the birth rate or decreased the death rate. Tho money would be much better spent on maternity institutions. Referring to the prevalence of venereal disease ho said that of every hundred deaths in Melbourne hospital thirty were syphilitic. Quite ten per cent, of expectant mothers were affected with the disease. He urged that Die remedy was early marriage and nioi’e complete education on disease by wide publicity.
