PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

REPUBLICAN PROGRAMME (By Eleotrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, June 14. For the first time in the history of the Republican Party women sat on an equality with men on the new national convention, which met at Cleveland and inaugurated the programme for the election ticket nominated by the convention, which closed yesterday. The assistant secretary will be a woman. WASHINGTON, June 14.

The .Republican ticket is commented on favourably by conservative eastern Republicans but has not aroused much enthusiasm in the section of the party dominated by progressive and eastern agriculturists. Disappointment is expressed by members of Congress that the middle west and agricultural west are not represented. Mr Dawes, who is one of Chicago's leading financiers, is an open and bitter foe of organised labour. He was leader of the open shop movement in Chicago. It is claimed by many that his election as Vice-President will serve to alienate the Labour vote in many districts. As chief of a big financial organisation he is unlikely to attract the farmer yote. since many western agriculturists blame financers in the big city for their troubles. Impartial observers declare that if the Democrats name a strong ticket and M. Lafollette runs as an independent candidate the outcome of the campaign will be highly uncertain. This feeling is not shared by Mr Coolidge, who in a message of congratulation to Mr Dawes said: “It will be a pleasure to be associated with you in public service, thereby assuming the certainty of a Republican victory.’’
