LOCAL ELECTIONS BIG FIELD FOR COUNCIL Tho Mayor of Motueka (Mr J; A. McGlashen) has been returned unopposed. For the Council, however, there is a big field of candidates. Four members of the old Council are seeking re-election, Crs. J. T. Brough, C. L. Jackson, I). W. Talbot, and E. S. Wrutt. The retiring Councillors are Messrs G. Heath and P. Everett. The now contestants are Messrs R. Atkins F. C. Batchelor, H. A. Chapman, A. E. Fry, J. McCarthy (senior), D. W. McGaveston. ' M. H. Staples, and R. H..S. Thompson. For tho Motueka representative on the Nelson Hospital and Charitablo A=d Board, Mrs P. G.-Moffatt, a member of the old Board, being the only nomination, has been elected. Mr W. Nicholson, chairman of tho Board, did not seek re-election. For two members of the Motueka Harbour Board, Messrs R. P. Hud--15 >n. M.P., and A. R. Edwards, have been re-elected.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT

The monthly sitting of tho Magistrate's Court, on Tuesday, with Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M.. on the Bench, cai'sed unusual public interest. Fifteen parents and guardians Avero eoivicted aui fined 2s and costs 7s for each child kept from school to go hoppicking, contrary to the regulations of the Education Board. Tho defendants were defended by Mr Spencer Smith, while Mr Thorp watched the interests cf tho Education Board.

For leaving a horso and vehicle unattended and without being chained, Ohver Clinton Wilkinson was convicted and fined 5s and costs 7s.

John W. Fowler pleaded guilty to driving three horses and vehicle on a publio highway, after sunset, witlunit carrying the necessary lights. Fined ss, costs 7s.

CIVIL BUSINESS

Judgment for plaintiff by default w&o given in tho following case: — Herman Douglas Stilwell v. Phillip Rowling, £ll 16s Bd. costs £2 17s Od. In tho caso Wra, Lane v. Motueka Borough Council ,claim for £6 regarding dispute over fixing current limiters. Non-suited, each party to pay own costs.
