Sl’KINd I.! ROVE EKTE A very successful fete was held at the. .Spring (drove school grounds on Saturday, December 16th. in aid ot the school pia-im fund. Ihe extensive grounds looked very gay and attractive, the drill hall, school and various stalls being prettily decorated with (muting, flowers, ferns ami other greenery. His Worship, the Mayor ot Nelson (Mr W. .Lock), who was introduced by the chairman of tlie School Committee (Mr .1. Wells) officially opened the fete, after which the chairman of the. Education Board (Mr F. W. 0. Smith) spoke briefly on the worthiness of (he object for which the fete was inaugurated and asked for "the liberal support of those present. The workers at the well-tilled sweets, produce- and; jumble stalls spent a busy afternoon supplying the demands of numerous customers, .while the fairy welt and afternoon lea were particularly well patronised. The art gallery (a splendid display ol 50 to 60 paintings by. Miss MiirieJ Eden), the decorated vehicles, fancy dresses, baby show. school running chainpipnsliips, tennis, shooting gallery and various competitions'., afforded good entertainment for I lie visiting public.' On exhibition at one of the stalls was the handsome silver cup preseii I <*d by Mr J. Newman for competition each season among (he cricket chibs of all schools in jjie Waimea district south of Richmond. The Spring (trove* boys are deserving of praise in that they haveheld the cup continuously since it was presented at the beginning of the 1920 cricket sea soil. Cross was held in tiro Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday evening and proved a most enjoyable function. The floor was in splendid order and the room fully occupied, while the music supplied by Mr Harold Williams and Mr 1L dlongh was all that could be desired. ' The hall was gaily decorated with, rainbow coloured strcaniers. and cpfourccl balloons, which were released after midnight and the effect was very pleasing. A most dainty supper was provided and full justice done to it by Hie many dancers who came from all parts of the district and city. The gathering broke up Mindly after midnight and was declared by one and all to be one of the most pleasant dances held here for some time.
