£SOO for SPIES "THE New Zealand Alliance are giving us a 1 foretaste of what we would have to put up with under Prohibition. They are appealing to the lowest and meanest in our midst —asking them to become common informers for a large reward. I 1 ■ ! The Common Informer flourishes under Prohibition. This restrictive law offers unlimited scope for spying; for the gratification of petty spite by the laying pf information against the innocent; for the gaining of filthy reward by the contemptible practice of sniffing aiound other people’s houses. Arising out of these possibilities looms that ugliest menace of all—Blackmail. An Insult to New Zealanders THE New Zealand Alliance’s offer of 1500 for information regarding “roll-stuffing” is an insult to all decent New Zealanders. There are officials whose duty it is to .supervise such'matters. There are officers of the law to take any necessary action. But to attempt to set square, honest, free New Zealanders a-spy-ing one upon another in this despicable manner is just the sort ot a “smart move” that appeals to the crooked minds and the mean souls of these people. We, the Licensed Trade, have of course nothing to fear from this scheme—which is, needless to say, just another ‘ subtle _ dodge to vilify by innuendo. As such it is too foolish to be regarded seriously. How do YOU like it—YOU to be invited to become an amateur spy?-—For Five Hundred Pounds / Give them the answer they deserve —a big, emphatic, definite C Vote for ■ . ■ ontinuance T 78
