SHIPPING TROUBLE
SUSTENANCE PAY ■ 1 (United Press Association.) A WELLINGTON, Dec. 1 Seamen who* are unemployed, owing to the present shipping position are receiving sustenance pay to-day, equivalent to what would be a- strike pay if a strike had been ordered. It is stated the Union recently had a fighting fund of about £12,000 and that it had been decided to pay married men £2 10s and single men £1 10s a week. It is estimator that 2000 seamen and firemen are idle, including 1200 affected by the hold-up. A meeting of seamen was held ■ this morning, but nothing was disclosed. Passengers numbering four hundred were conveyed to the Makura by ferries, also a large consignment of nails. The departure was effected without a hitch.
The company has not so far dismussed, the question of maiming other idle steamers with volunteer labour.
