POLITICAL

(To the Editor)

Sir, —As one amongst the largo audience at the Theatre on Monday night, to listen to Mr Gilbert’s openingspeech in the City in connection with .his candidature for this constituency. 1 was agreeably surprised to hear sue!) a well considered and informative political address. As a rule electioneering addresses are designed to be vote catchers. and usually relevant political questions are avoided. The speaker at Monday night’s meeting in his remarks covered a wide area pf political questions, and revealed to his audience a clear cut vision of his political opinions. It seems to me, sir, that this constituency has in Air Gilbert a gentleman, who is eminently* fitted by Ills energy, ability and busi-ness-like capabilities as evinced in bis own private business, and in the gratuitous services lie has rendered to his fellow citizens on local body work, and as Prescient of the Nelson ('handier ol Commerce, to he our representative. Without-, seeking to disparage Mr Atinoro in any \iay or east, reflection upon whatever lie |has done for I lie, district in his capacity as mir representative, it is -quite certain that whatever work he has accomplished could be quite as well done by Mr Gilbert, and what is more important the latter gentleman being a, staunch supporter of Mr Massey and the. Government that has done so much, and so successfully guided the destinies of lids Dominion during the. strenuous and troubled times from which we arc' just, emerging, he would bo assisting to carry out t lie real Liberal policy possessed 'by the present Dovernme.nl. The impression that has rested on Sunny Nelson for sometime now of being a hindrance to a. progressive Government s policy must be removed.' This is no time "for Nelson to own a political watch dog, or a free lance lilt-uigrat everybody, and crossing swords sometimes with bis own friends. Let ns have a member with some constructive and progressive ideas suitable to the needs of the Do minion. In Mr Gilbert wo can satelv place our confidence, who is capable of doing all that we can desire, in this respect,’ and we can rest satisfied that he, will not confine himself to parochial politics, but will take a wider outlook and enter into a sphere of national politics, ia the pursuit of which he wilt surely bring credit upon himself, confer honour upon Nelson and add lustre our Dominion, .
