New Duty on Tea! t. I 6/3 per Ik & How would you like to pay 8/6 per lb. for your tea ? Yet that is what tea will cost if the taxation derived from beer, wine and spirits is transferred to tea! The arithmetic is simple. The country derives about Two-and-a-half Millions of money from liquor duties. If Prohibition comes this money has to be raised by extra duties on something else. Why not on tea? The duty on tea now is only 3d. to 7d. per lb. We import about eight million pounds of it annually. Five shillings a pound on that quantity would produce the Two-and-a-half Million Pounds sterling which is required. If you want Prohibition you’ll have to pay this money somehow. Put it on sugar if you like —and sugar will cost lOd. per pound. It will have to go on some common eVbyday necessity, because other things are not imported in sufficient quantity to yield the money by duties. YOU'LL pay it, anyhow Can You Afford It?
