BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 12

A series of now earthquakes, vast, seas, and electrical storms have greatly hindered the rescue work being done in northern Chili, and added to the list of casualties and property damage.

Communication with the stricken area is still impossible. All nows is coming via Valparaiso, which itself was slightly damaged by earthquakes. Coquimbo and Copiapo, which are completely obliterated, .are now the scene of inhuman looting. Dead and injured are being robbed and rescuers are hampered by groups of armed men who are taking valuables at will.

SANTIAGO, Nov. 13

'Fla* disaster in Chili is even greater than was ai first reported. At least a thousand are dead, though it is expected there are many more. The city of Vallenar ami surrounding districts are completely destroyed. Thousands are homeless in the provinces of Antofagasta. Stacama. and Coquimbo. * The Meteorological Institute, explaining the eosmographie character of the upheaval, declared that the movement was on an ocean grave. There is evi deuce of a terrific disturbance in the bed of the Pacific, resulting in such a tearing of the hot loin of the ocean that immense quantities of water were sucked bade causing an unprecedented recession along the Chilian const. Several times (he water swept outward, returning in the shape or a great wave, des troying everything before it. The In. statute declares that the earth shock coincided with a sun spot over the ecu tral meridian of the sun beginning on November 5. The shock began at tin* end of an abnormally hot day.

United Press Association messages estimate the loss of life in Hie Chilian earthquake .and tidal wave at 1400. Starvation, pestilence, and exposure are claiming additional victims. Relief expeditions are starting from unscathed cities ns soon as the railways are restored, but owing to the heavy damage it will be several days before this is possible. Martial law has been proclaimed in Copiapo.
