Support for the contention that houses erected in the year ended 31st March, 1922, more than provided for the increase in population, was produced by the Minister of Labour in the House. Don. G. J. Anderson read a -return which showed that for the period mentioned, the population of the cities, boroughs and town districts had increased by 26,610, while houses erected in or in eburse of erection in the corresponding areas, numbered, according to local body returns, 4330. In addition there had been erected at Papanui 55 workers’ dwellings, making a grand total of 4385. The number of bouses required, according to the standard of persons to a 5-roomed house, adopted by the Board of Health in 1919, was 3230, leaving a surplus of 1165. Mr Anderson also read a return for the whole of New Zealand, from information supplied by the Government Statistician This showed the increase in population from 17/4/21 to 31/3/22 tn be 29.303 and the houses quoted m the first return to be increased to 5828, hv addition of 1443 estimated to have I,’fcn built in the. country areas. The number of houses required to meet the increase in population was shown as 4000, leaving a surplus of 1828.
