REPORT

Cabling to the Agricultural Department on Bth April, the High Commissioner reports on the butter market:—

“Hie extent of the recent rapid increase in the value, although only partially reflected in retail prices has resulted in limitation of consuming demand, and buyers are therefore holding off. Danish in larger supply owing to weakening Continental trade, and ia quoted to-day at 176/- to 100/- per cwt f.o.b. Supplies of English are more plentiful and selling in country markets at from 1/2 to 1/4 per lb. The result is that prices are much easier, and tendency is downward. New Zealand to-day is selling at 180 s per cwt, and the. market is slow. Official quotations for Bth April are: — “New Zealand, 180/- to 188/- per cwt (1/71 to 1/81 per ib). Exceptional, 190/- per cwt (1/81. pi.r Hi.) ■’Australian (salted), 170/- to .176/- per cwt (1/61 to 1/63- per lb); (unsalted), 174/- to 176/- per cwt (1/6/,- to 1/63 Pfill)).'

"Argentine, 160/'- to 158/- per cwt (1/51 to 1/6 per lb). "Danish, 186/- to 198/- per cwt (1/8 to l/9a<l per lb).” Reporting on the cheese market, the High Commissioner states that the market is easier, with only fair demand. Official quotations for Bth April are: —

New Zealand Frozen Beef: Hinds, 4&d; fores, 2|d.” “Hemp.—Manilla market quiet but. steady. C grade April-June shipments sold £35 per ton; July-September shipments, £34 10s to £34 15s per ton;. H grade quoted £34 10s per ton. Out-! put from Ist January to 51st March was 278,000 bales, against 187,000 for same time last year. New Zealand market dull, business reported in spot high-, points round about £3l per ton. rlo interest shown in shipments.
