THE WEST COAST
PASSING THROUGH A QUIET PERIOD WQRK IN MINES SLACK (By, Tolegraph—Special to Mad) CHRISTCHURCH, Tbis Day The West Coast is" ; how passing through a quiet period, the quietest it has known for some time. _Trade is dull and shipping, though not at a standstill, is at . the moment engaging chiefly the smaller packets in -the 'carrying of general cargo to adjacent ports. Timber is showing a little activity, hut is quiet. An unfortunate feature of the position is that work in the mines, particularly the Slate; mines, is slack. There is, in fact, an -abnormal amount of short time being '.worked which is attributed-to shortage of orders. There is, however, an early prospect of the general conditions improving. ' ~.
