takaka (From Our Own Correspondent.) Saturday last was quite a big day in Takaka. For the past year the business places have observed Saturday as their Saturday half-holiday. With tnc advent of April, the Wednesday half-holiday came into force again, so all Takaka was open for business on Saturday afternoon and evening. To mark the event the Takaka Biass Band turned out ami played selections up and down the main street, during the evening. The town was thronged with people, and the shops and picture show all report good business. In tho afternoon Hiawatha. Btennis team (holders) easily defeated East Takaka (challengers) for possession oftlie Hudson challenge cup. At Central Takaka the final cup match was played to decide tho cricket championship for the season, when Central defeated Uruwhemui by 38 runs after a very exciting game. Arrangements for j a Golden Bay Association tennis tournament on the local courts arc well in hand, and numerous entries are in. There should be some veal good tenuis shown on (lie Saturday and Monday. The competition includes ladies’ and men’s singles and doubles. FoiMhe Trent Cup j —men’s singles —there arc 14 entries ami the ultimate winner is hard to pick. FARMERS’ UNION DOG TRIALS On Thursday and Friday last tho local Farmers’ Union ran off a very j successful dog trials competition. Thej weather was perfect, there were mi-i morons entries for all events, and a j very fair attendance of the public. I This year there was a noticeable ah-' solid?* of outside competitors. Last I year car loads came from Tapawera,'! Kolia to, Waimeas, and Motueka—this ; year all the competitions were hobwoou f local dons, The trials were held at tho j wrong time of the year for visitors, everyone hein gtoo bus’yto leave home, j It is suggested that the competitions j be held on 3rd June next vear, as being a more suitable date, However, as 1 ! said before, the trials were anything I but a failure, though of course outside entries would have materially added to the interest for all concern tel. On Thursday evening the Farmers’ Union held a very sccessful dance, wol (attended ,and everyone having a. good time. The net proceeds from tho dance, (£5) were handed to the Takaka,; Brass Band. The following is the winning list-of tvents: — No 1, —Open. Head, bring back, hold in ring and yard; time 15 mins.; Ist prize £4 and Tapawera Oup and special prize of 21s; 2nd prize 30s ; 3rd 10s: Mr Harold Sparrow’s Glen, 40 pts, 1; Mr J. Wilkinson’s Kelp, 31 pts, 2; Mr T, 11. Lines’s Jimmy, 30 pts, 3. There were 13 dogs out for this. The winner scored well in all, and wasi tlio r only dog who yarded his sheep. j No. 2.-—Open (Maiden); head, bring | back, hold in ring and yard. Prizes 20s ' and 10s: Mr Jas. Franklyn’s Sweep, 52 pts, 1; Mr J. Wilkinson’s Kelp, 15 pts, 2. ' Twelve dogs competed. The winning! dog put up a splendid performance, and was very favourabzly commented on by the Juilge. No. 3.—Open (Juvenile); head, bring back, hold in ring and yard: Ist prize £1 and Haytcr’s Challenge Cup and special prize 21s ; 2nd prize l()s: Master P. Harwood’s Snowy, 27 pts, 1 ; Master F. Freeman’s Scot, 18 points 1 , 2. Six lads came out fo rtliis.

Friday’s events were as follow’; No. 4. —Open. Huntaway through three sets of flails and slew; Ist prize £4 and 2Ls special; 2nd 30s ; 3rd 10s: Mr T. H. Lines’ Jimmy, 27 pts, 1 ; Mr J. Wilkinson’s Kelp, 24 pts, 2; Mr G. Franklyn’s ’Glen, 21 pts, 3. Six came out for this. The sheep ran very kindly for the winner, who “holed out’’ in 2.55. The time limit was 12 minutes, No. 5. —Local. Huntaway through 3 sets of flags and slew ; Ist prize £1 and cup presented by Mr I>. L. Rees; 2nd! 10s and special 21,s : Mr G. A.
