CANTERBURY MARKET (Ihiited Press Assnciatibu) CHRISTCHURCH, April 7 Oats are liriner. Quotations for A grade Cartons are up to 2s fid to farmers, and for B grade they are 2s 5d to 2s 6d. Then- is nut much business, but Southern harvest reports and the absence of offers from farmers are combining to strengthen the market. A slight demand tor Algerians has developed, quotations being up to 2s 3.61 at- country stations. Shipments of barley .are being made to England. On the local market prices .have been very irregular, and maltsters seem disinclined to operate. It- is being noted that they* still hold a considerable carry-over stock from last season. The seed market is unaltered. It is understood that there has been some inquiry from abroad for crested dogstail, but Canterbury produces little of this seed The chaff market is showing signs of a little life. Sales have, been made at nearby stations at up to 3 7s 6d. The movement, is in sympathy with the better lone for oats, but what the value would be. if extensive supplies came to hand is difficult to forecast. In the meantime, there is. an improved local demand. Very heavy supplies of potatoes have gone to Auckland during the week, and further substantial consignments are to follow within a few days. Reports generally are tdhat favourable yields will be the rule when the digging of main crops commences in earnest after Easter. The damage from blight will be very small. Wellington has been a very small consumer of Canterbury potatoes so far this season, duo possibly to the Wairarapa and southern Hawkos Bay crops being much belter than was promised six weeks ago. Onions are worth £5 5s per 6m to farme>s. The crop is ig’at this year, although the .quality is P-!..s are s' H nm s;.;eVt i of iitiulry from England, and export is proceeding.
