MAGISTRATE’S COURT

(Before Messrs G. M. Rout and J. E. Hume, Justices).

A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held tills morning, when several cases were dealt with by Justices.

FAILING TO ATTEND PARADE

E. J. Champtaloup was charged with failing to attend! parade. Sergeant-Major Frank, in evidence, said defendant'had been sent a notice to attend the parade, A letter was received from defendant, who is out of Nelson, m which it was stated that lie had not received any notice of parade. It was decided to adjourn the hearing in order to give the prosecution an opportunity of ■ ascertaining jf defendant had received the notice. BY-LAW CASES For riding a motor-cycle across the, inter-section of Waimea. and Hardystreet at a speed greater than six miles, an hour Noel Watson, who pleaded guilty by letter, was convicted and lined £l, costs 7s. Constable Tucker stated that accused was riding at- a. pace between 20 and 25 miles an hour. When stopped, defendant admitted tliis was about tho speed he was travelling. Louis Baigent pleaded gudty to a similar offence in respect to driving a, motor ear. AVitness explained; that he was not driving at a reckless or dangerous speed—about eight miles an hour. Constable Tucker said defendant’s speed was about 20 miles an hour. Convicted and ordered to pay costs 7s.

CASES ADJOURNED

Several other.cases called on were adjpumed. In an adjourned defended case, Air 'Achosen, for the defendant, asked that it bo adjourned' for hearing by a Magistrate. The Bench said an adjournment would only he granted for a good reason. It was pointed out, however, that some misunderstanding had 1 , arisen as to the. date of the previous adjournment and on this account the Bench ,r ran ted a further adjournment.
