ELECTRIC LIGHT

(To the Editor) Sir, —It is with great regret that read in this day’s issue of your papt •of tile first hitch in connection wit the electric light and' power scheme, being carried with such a majority 'i the pull. At all events I had. reaso to believe that the Harbour Boar would put no obstacle in the way, an us the Chairman stated, no matte where the site is, someone will b offended, either because it affects hi pocket or his comfort. It is after certain degree of hesitation that 1 ver tare to supply the “uninformed put lie” with my opinion on the eloctri light scheme, as I have seen it state that no amateur engineer or hi m c engineers in Nelson can be allowe to tamper with the undertaking, bu may say that the residents near th proposed site will not be troubled wit smoke, as the chimney at present con nected to the boilers is 150 feet higli and understand it is to bo rc-orente here in Nelson, and is amply high t carry the fumes and gases we’d clea from residents in the immediate vi cinity. And as regards black smoke there won’t be any, as the boilers ar of modern design, and _ fitted wit: mechanical stokers. Neither shout the noise affect them, as the power i to be supplied by steam coudensinj sets unable to be heard 30 yards away and not the town gas, suction gas, o oil engine sets, which have always th noisy exhaust and occasional back lire even under best running coudi tions So much for the proposed site, which I venture to state is tin best from a ratepayers’ point! of view in so far as electricity will he produce! at a minimum of cost, possibly a mor expensive site may be got nearer th Rocks, but the island site surely wa brought up as a joke, which wouh mean not only the blocking of the oh entrance with a bridge, but that fuc and stores would bo entirely depomlen on shipping, when there isi a strong possibility that coal! exists Oven under neath our own city. In conclusion should say the Harbour Board were il advised in turning down the proposm site without, first going into the detail of plans submitted and what will b< the actual results if plant was erector there. Thanking you, Mr Editor, hr your valuable space, I am, etc., JAMES WYLLIE.
