END OF SEASON AfATCH
On Salurdav evening the club concluded a most successful season by a match, Town v. Country, m wine eighteen players competed. the pi-iy tailing place at the Mental Hospital. The following players represented their respective clubs: Nelson—Dodds iraIbon. Clutlcn, J. D. Kemp, Wilkinson. Clausen, Satherlcy. Shaml, Town —Sevemc-Mowbray, Cl. Cole, kilis, Clarke, Allport, Higgins, fecolt. tSheary. The match resulted in a substantial win for the country by o 2 to li with one unfinished game. When play was over a most enjoyable supper was partaken of, and the prizes for the tournament were picScotcd. The first prize (a gold medal presented by Mr J. D- Kemp) was von by E. H.. Scverne, with the line score of 171,- wins and losses. The second prize I a handsome fountain pen donated by Mr Severne) was won by Mr !>■ Trathen, who scored wins and 4 2 losses. The third prize, donated by the club, was won by Mr J. D. Kemp, with 14 wins and 5 losses. Lnfortunately this prize, a hook on chess, had not arrived when expected, so the actual presentation was held over. Mr W. B. Griffin was unfortunate m not .completing his 20 games. Had he done so, lie would have been sure of a place •in the prize list. At a meeting held after the play, Mr Ellis in the chair, several matters were brought, up for discussion. Mr Dodds referred to the loss the club had sustained in the death of Mr A. E. Cresswell, and it was resolved that the secretary write to the late president’s family expressing the clot) s sympathy in their bereavement. Regarding a letter from Canterbury Chess- Club re club championships, it was resolved to set up a committee consisting of Mesrs Dodds. Severne, and the secretary, to deal with the matter. Opportunity was taken during the evening by members of the club oi presenting the lion, sec., Mr C. V Wilkinson, with a Waterman fountain pen as a small token of the esteem in which he is held, and as a slight recognition of his excellent services as secretary., Members expressed the opinion that the season had been a great success, chiefly due to Mr Wilkinson’s keen interest and untiring energy. After a vote of thanks had been proposed to Hit l donors of the prizes, and to .the staff of the Menial Hospital fur providing supper and affording such a line opportunity to meet over tho board, the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair, carried by acclamation.
