THE CHARGE DIRECT
A well-known American judge oitccf missed several hams that had been hanging in his barn loft. He suspected that the thief did not live many miles away, hut he made no direct charge against anyone; in fact lie refrained from mentioning his loss to a single soul. A few days later his neighbour called. “Say, Judge,’’ said the man, “1 heard‘you had some hams stole the other night.” “Yes,” said the Judge, very conhdentiallvl; “'but don’t toll anyone. You and I are the only ones who know it!”
