SAVINGS IN DEPARTMENTS (Ily Telegraph.—’Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Referring lo the savings in t’ x " pendituro to-day, Mr Massey said that tile General Stores Control Hoard had been established to include the General Manager of the Railways and one of his senior officers, the Secr r 'tarv, and Chief Telegraph Engineer, Lb amt T. Department; the administrative head of tlffi Public Works Department and the Chief Electrical Engineer, Staff Ocffier of the Defence Department, Controller General of Prisons Association. Secretary to the Treasury, and the heads of oilier Departments'.would have a seat on the Board when it was considering matters in reference lo their Departments. Pc gulations wore at present being prepared by the Board, at id it was cuntidently expected that it would be able to save at least £200.000 a year by standardisation of articles in common use, aiuf by preventing Departments from competing against each other. Kadi Department had hitherto looked after itself. Already a large saving had been made. The total savings thus estimated were: Purchase Hoard £200.000; savings in Public Service £200,000; savings in Public Service Commissioners’ own department £130.000; this gave £550.000, and other items brought the total to £600,000. They had not yet finished with the flour subsidy, which would he £IBO,OOO fontho coming yea-, but would bo wiped out altogether next year. Taking the savings in Lie service and the' withdrawals of subsidies the savings would be about £1,500,000.
