CORRESPONDENCE

P. AND T. PROFITEERING 4TO the Editor.) Sir, —I recently applied at /the Glenhope post and telegraph office for a telephone connection with Nelson.:, I got my number, but, owing to the difficulty of hearing over this wire, a conversation, which could easily have been completed within the ordinary time-limit of three minutes (charge 1/-) had to be extended to 11 minutes J (charge 4d for each minutes after three minutes). Ido not thinkJthat I could have spoken with. Nelson, at all had not the officer in charge kindly come to my assistance. Now, I understand that the principal cause, of the trouble is induction, the satnei wire being used for Morse purposes, the Department having failed to _extend the metallic circuit from Kohatu or Tadmor to Glenhope. In;-a word, the trouble is due to qua'cy of plant. That being so, surely the Department should not penalise users of the telephone by enforcing the full cliarja, and thus charging them for many minutes of communication that, through no iafclt of their own. failed to be communicative. IHe officer iu charge, having rip discretion in the matter, was forced to charge me 3/8 for what should have been a shilling service. If the Department had beeri selling an alarm clock, instead of a false alarm telephone service, such a charge would have blade it a profiteer. No doubt this soft of thing happens, at other places than Glenhope. Is it not time that somebody kicked ?-I am, <*^ 14th March, 1921.
