At the Science Congress Judge Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, read a paper on anthropology and the government of subject races which was specially interesting in view of Australasia assuming the governing of mandated territories. He urged the need for studying the anthropology of the natives, and conserving such of their customs and institutions as were, harmless or helped as an instrument in good government. In view of this it is announced that a Government anthropologist will shortly be appointed. WHITES’ FUTURE FOOD SIJPPLY MELBOURNE, This Day. At the Science Congress Professor Griffiths Taylor, dealing with the future of whit© settlement, predicted grave fear regarding the food supply of the white people within the next ceqtury. Whites would round five wprld centres—London, 'Chicago, Sydney, Durban, and Buenos Ayres. Professor Taylor said a. geographical study of the position emphasised the necessity of u close alliance wjth the United States. To build up the chemical manufactures’ of Japan and America* and neglect our own, was simply building their armies and navies. A strong protectionist policy was needed. Congress “ adopted a resolution unanimously recommending th© _ Federal Ministry to foster chemical industries i under such conditions as to ensure j maximum readiness for the production) of munitions in case of need.
