MAPU AZOTES. On a recent Saturday night Mr Bensonunm gave an. illustrated Address to the Mapua Fruitgrowers’ Association on “Pruning ami Grafting.’' This is a subject’ to which Mr Hcnsorftann lias dovnteci very carelnl study, and the. evening proved very helpful and interesting ; a fact to which tho extremely iele hour to which the. meeting was protracted bore eloquent testimony. Oti Tuesday last a mooting of residents was field in the Cool Store to further consider the matter of the proposed Light Railway for tho district. •Mr No it ago took the chair and spoke very ably on the urgent need, for the railway, and the manner in which it was expected that the preliminary and working expenses would be met. Mr Hunter, the organising secretary, gave, a detailed a (-count of what had already boon done., and of what still remained to be done, to bring the proprosed railway from a visionary project ''to aii actual fact. A strongly worded resolution was moved, hut owing to the somewhat small aftondance'an amendment in favour of adjournment was carried unanimously to allow of a heller advertised meeting ensuring a more representative attendance,’especially of settlers from Malta na, Bronte, and Ruby Bay. ■ Tho adjourned meeting to bo held by daytight, at f2.30 p.m., on Saturday, 19th ilist.’ should he a large and enthusiastic gathering. . The recent wet weather has again brought prominently to our notice, the dire need for an - improvement at the cross roads by our Post Oiiice, where the gutters from the hill discharge their water on to tho road, ami the i-csnltant “Slough of Despond” F more easily imagined than described! The mention of “post dlioe” reminds us that many people hero are wondering whether now that we have a fairly regular launch service five days a week, we have nob a right to expect tc get out mail oftener than we did when tho launch only came in twice a week, and some two or three families com posed, the entire population. Also, ■ with the increasing population, and therefore demand, many think that it is time that money orders ami postal notes could be ‘ obtained without having to wait till they can be procured from Kelson, a tiresome and inconvenient process. A rising township, and rapidly growing centre like Mapua, has a right to expect, some consideration from the-Govern-ment in regard to postal conveniences, which are a first necessity from a business standpoint. * We regret ■ that owing to lack of housing accommodation wo have lost from our midst Mr and Mrs Williams nml family. Mr Williams proved himself a man of considerable public spirit, ?uul such men are a groat help in a new and growing j9lacr. We hope that before a. great while, Mr Williams may see his way to return to Mapua. Mrs Wakefield also lias left Mapua for Invercargill one or two pleasant “at homes” being tendered to her by way of farewell.
