CORRESPONDENCE

{To the Editor.] Sir.—Although your leading i vtxjo on the sugar scarcity has made many points clearer,, there still remain several questions that require elucidating. The statement that so far as Nelson is concerned, the sugar is allotted to Messrs Griffin’s, Kirkpatrick’s, and two local wholesale firms is incorrect, for at the inception of the present ■ rationing scheme retailers were allowed to name their own agent through whom their sugar supplies were to come, and in some instances local retailers named one of the wholesale firms w Wellington, and are _ now drawing their supplies via this medium. This is not so important an inaccuracy as the statement regarding the tons in each shipment that is supposed to be for the small retailers, and for which no record of distribution need be produced. The small stores may be supplied from this or they may not; but I have the best of grounds for believing that a considerable amount of this goes in bag lots or more to special customers who arc not retailers at all, but consumers; and if this bo true, then an. obvious injustice is done to those of us who must, he content with an allowance of, say. two pounds, or maybe none at all. If’ the above statement is inaccurate, a denial i 3 all that is needed; failing this, one may safely be left to form one’s own conclusions. I am, etc., G.'N.W. (The correspondent ha s misread the remarks in relation to .the dist'ibution locally. It was mainly because , of additional lots arriving from Wellington, rendering figures offered by local distributors slightly incomplete, that we decided to communicate with the Sugar Controller direct.
