MARINE ENGINEERS’ STRIKE
DESIRE TO RETURN TO WORK (By Electric Telegraph--Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association^ MELBOURNE, Feb. 20. The engineers of the Federal -fleet desire to return to work under the terms offered, and are endeavouring to obtain their executive’s permission to resume work. The marine engineers’ losses to date approximate £30,000. Victorian engineers regard the proposal to buy an Island fleet as frivolous, as the institute’s executive has neither the money nor the administration to run the line. SYDNEY, Feb. 20. The Labour Council has issued a manifesto condemning the action of the Federal Government in closing down the funds of the arine Engineers’ Institute, and preventing anyone from rendering* them assistance, as one of tlse greatest attacks ever made on unionism in Australia, and) calling all unionists to stand behind the engineers. The manifesto adds that ‘‘any shirking of the issue now will encourage our foes to strike again and again, until unionism lies vanquished beneath their feet.”
