THE CABBAGE FLY

(To the EJltor.j Sir,—Having soon aiq enquiry i u your columns b v “Kikhen Garden” re the cabbage fly, and as a number of persons have asked me how I keep my cabbage plants free of i|, the following treatment may bo of interest to some of your j readers :—To 1 part black loaf 40 add 800 pads' soapsuds. nr, as 1 have mca- 1 sured it. out, dt is roughly 1 te.'igpoonful j of 1LL.40 to I, gal. soap suda. Black leaf ; exract, which is not s uch a s rong ' tobacco mixture., can be used equally | eifotive if mixed four Lines the. .. proportion of 1J.L.40, <»• four teaspoon- , fuls to £ gallon. Mix only sufficient at J a, time to do the plaids once is best, | and if no sprayer is available, a brush t is the most cconomiea>l way to use same, j and all tha;t is necessary is to see that ; the plant is wet with the mixture. Use , jiUxaire on a lino day and retrain from ( watering plants for at least 24 hours i after. In very hot weather it may be necessary 'to go over the plants twice j a week,but at present I find about once ; a. week is enough. In using a brush it , is only noeessaav to shake off 'the mix- i ture on to the plank I have done 150 plants with considerably less 'than half a gallon of mixture, and not spai* ing with it. but of course it takes more i as the plants grow bigger. I mention . soapsuds, as they arc always available in alums-, all households, and they do excellently, as ordinary wafer becomes too hard* ami will not, wet the plaids when the black leaf is added to it.
