SYDNEY, May 25
Both sides in the shipping dispute are awaiting the result of the compulsory conference, but no decision is expected to-day. The Trades Hall officials anticipate an early settlement, as the decision to strike was not unanimous. The majority of the men would welcome an early resumption of work. The prices of foodstuffs arc soaring.

Tho compulsory conference on tiic shipping dispute adjourned till Thursday. L\u amicable feeling prevailed, and it is confidently anticipated that an early settlement, will result.

As a result of the seamen’s strike, twelve northern and 1 a number of southern collieries have been compelled to close
The factory employees’ unions have received warning that unless the strike is settled a large number of factories will suspend operations
The seamen’s secret ballot hji n fi , commenced, but numbers of men are not voting.

MELBOURNE, Tin’s Day. The conference has adjourned to enable the seamen’s -representative of Queenskind to attend. He k delayed as a result of the quarantine restrictions. Loyalists rearmed work on the wharves under the protection of a strong force of mounted and foot police. There has been no demonstration of strikers so. far.
Five thousand' have been rendered idle as a result of tfcg strike. A writ has been issued on behalf of one New South Wales, two Queensland, and two South Australian members of the Seamen’s Federation against five members of the Executive Council, seeking a declaration that all acts of business transacted by defendants as executive officers since Jim. 29th are illegal and void, and sking for an injunction restraining them from acting as executive officers, or dealing in any way w.th the funds of the Federation.
