CITY WATER SUPPLY

DAM FAST FALLING

USE OF HOSE PROHIBITED

Following on a visit to the reservoir this morning by the Mayor ami City Engineer, a notice is inserted in. this issue requesting citizens to exercise every possible care in the use of the water owing to the supply fast diminish-

mg. It is also notified that the use of the hose is prohibited for all purposes till further notice.

The watering of the streets will cease forthwith, as a further precaution in conserving the supply. The position is that the big dam, is falling so rapidly that to-day there was only about 11 feet of water at the wall instead of 30 feet. The top end of the dam is dry. At night time there i- a small overflow from the weir, but it is evident that the quantity flowing into /he dam is far below the draw off. At the time of the visit this mo r ning the water was below' the crest of the weir, hut there was evidence that there had been an overflow not long previously. I is believed that a large quantity of water is being used for other than domestic purposes, for although little gardening is being done now the many green lawns to be seen are evidence that a great deal of water is used thereon. The Mayor’s request to householders to be as careful with the water as possible is thoroughly justified by the present position, which is quite bad enough, but will get worse until a good rain comes.
