In view of the strike and the probable shortage of supplies, there is the keenest demand for all classes of produce, and prices are advancing.

MELBOURNE. May 21. On the application of the Controller of Shipping, the Federal Arbitration Court decided to intervene in the shipping dispute, and called a compulsory conference of the parties for Monday next. The application was made on the ground of public interest. The unloading of a number of idle vessels has not so far been interfered with. The crews of six vessels, including one overseas ship, have given 24 hours’ not'ce of intention to leave their vessels. 'L'he water-side workers have not yet discussed the position, but resent the actum of the seamen in precipitating trouble.

Coastal steamship owners are requesting the Minister of Labour under the Arbitration Act to take a compulsory secret ballot among the _ seamen to ascertain whether the majority favour a strike, as they believe the .men will vote overwhelmingly against’ it.

A cable reecived from Mr Massey states that the following fourteen Vessels will load in New Zealand in June: Artiwa, Armagh, Raranga, Kia Ora, Whakatnne, Carpentaria, Paparoa, Bimutaka, Pakeha, Devon, Remuera, Suffolk. Shropshire, and Orari. _ Mr Massey states that, owincc to delays and labour troubles the Norehana, Essex, and Waimana-, which had been allocated for June loading, would fall back into July.
