THE NEW ARMY

MIL CHUR-CHILITS’ THlfc YEAR’S

NEEDS.

An. appeal was made by Air Churchill in a, speech at' the .Mansion Houee to employers.' to keen open the places of men retained in the Army of Occupation, Below is a dammary of the main points of his speech:—We are letting go three men- out - ot every four who were serving with the colours on November 11 Inst, and wo are paying the fourth man double to finish up the job. Wo are recreating the old Army. At least a year will, be required to form the voluntary ,Army. Recruits, mostly volunteers for -tifro or three years’ (service, are joining at the rate of more than TOGO a day. and the rate i*-vising.' If that continues we shall bo able to release the Territorials who wont to India at the beginning of the war.

The hiatus between the great, compulsory armies which won the war and the comparatively iSinjal!. voluntary armies needed to guard the Empire in peace must be bridged by emergency measures.

Woe to those, whether enemies abroad or bad citizens at home, who would rob us of the fruits of. our victory. Another reason why we must maintain a largo force in the present year is that we are going to take measures which will make it physically impossible for -Germany to begin a war of revenge, at any rate during our lifetime/

We arc going to -make Germany pay what L rightful and possible in reparation of the damage she has done. It is absolutely untrue to say that we are keeping large forces to fight in Russia. If Russia is to be saved she must bo saved by the Russians. The new States in the East of Europe particularly Poland, must be safeguarded. The future of Europe and the whole effectiveness of the League of Nations depend on a trustworthy Allied 'e close to Germany.
