Influenza on .the Niagara • s been rapidly increasing. There aro thirtynine cases in alt.- Major Pettit states, that fho condition of the* patents is satisfactory. LONGER QUARANTINE WANTED.
| WELLINGTON, April 6. • A depui ation representing thirty-one trade unions to the Mon. Sir James Allen urged that the quarantine period be exteded to seven days, and that adequate accommodation be provided tor ashore where necessary. Sir James Allen replied that the quarantine period of bO hours wa s tentative and it rested with the Health Department to extend it, and meanwhile he would not express any opinion. Fifteen hundred people could be accommodated on Motuihi by using tents.- ’ The : transport workers' secretary said that the watersidere would refuse tb aVork the Niagara unless she had seven days' • quarantine.

j WELLINGTON, April 5. ’ A steward on. the *Maunka who was sick and had a somewhat high temperature was taken to ’he hospital on Friday tor- observation. The watersiders engaged bn-discharging the vessel's ci*rgd: learned of the matter -his afternoon and immediately stopped work. The condition of the steward is unchanged according to the latest report.

CHRISTCHURCH, April 6. Dr A. B. 'Pearson, pathologist at Christchurch Hospital, in a lecture last night on influenza, seated -that no bacteriological examination had shown the presence of the plague germ, and it was certainly not plague. It was not- the same type of disease aa the great plague (the Black Death) of the Fourteenth century. If there were a recrudescence of the disease thiswinter he though’it would be in a milder form"; though it might be more" widespread.
