! The Canterbury Education Board today ; unanimously passed the following resolution : “That this board, strongly protests agams; the proposal that teachers’ 'salaries- be paid direct from the Education Department, Wellington, ae being contrary to the provisions of the Education Act, and would regard such action a« a. further insidious encroachment on the- rights of Education Boards so characteristic of the present ' regime ; that the board trusts that the Minister's tenure of office will not be noted through the coming years as the period during which bureaucratic codtrol usurped tho functions of' democra'tic educational adminififration l in the Dominion; and that copies of this resolution bo forwarded to 'the* Minister of Education and -the Canteihury members of Parliament j also to other Education Hoards in the Domnnbn, asking ''heir co-operation in the' board’sprotest.” The movbr said there had for some’ time past been a most marked tendency bn the part of the department to set up a bureaucracy in ‘ VVellihgton, and to bring the board# ‘ more and ‘more into disfavour, with an ultimate . view of doing .away with thelm altogether.’ A determined attempt should be made by’ the hoards to prevent any more ehctoaching on their rights.
